NIPT
At SureScan Studio in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, we provide Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) services designed to give clear, accurate insights into your baby's health early in pregnancy. Our approach is simple, safe, and built around patient care. We use trusted technology and work with certified laboratories to deliver fast and reliable results.

What is Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)?
NIPT is a blood test that screens for common genetic conditions in a developing baby. We perform this test using a small blood sample from the pregnant person, taken after 10 weeks of gestation. The sample is then analysed to detect conditions such as:
-
Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
-
Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
-
Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13)
-
Sex chromosome differences (e.g. Turner syndrome)
-
Fetal sex determination (optional)
Because NIPT is non-invasive, it poses no risk to the baby. Unlike procedures such as amniocentesis, there are no needles inserted into the womb.

When Should You Book a Fetal Wellbeing Scan in Roscommon?
NIPT is available to anyone who is at least 10 weeks pregnant and wants more information about their baby's genetic health. It's especially useful if:
-
You're aged 35 or older
-
You have a history of genetic conditions in your family
-
Previous scans or tests suggest a possible issue
-
You want early reassurance
While NIPT offers high accuracy, it is still a screening test, not a diagnostic one. If your result comes back as high risk, further testing (like CVS or amniocentesis) may be recommended.

How Accurate is NIPT?
NIPT is one of the most accurate screening tools available during pregnancy. For example:

-
Down syndrome detection rate: 99.9%
-
False positive rate: Less than 0.1%
-
Sex chromosome accuracy: Over 95%
Still, it’s important to remember that this is a screening test. It estimates risk, not a definite diagnosis. If your result shows high risk, follow-up tests will be needed to confirm.
