Early Fetal Scans
At SureScan Studio in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, we provide early fetal scans that give you fast, accurate reassurance during the earliest weeks of pregnancy. From as early as 6 weeks, our scans confirm pregnancy, check for a heartbeat, and offer visual clarity when things feel uncertain. We know these early weeks can be full of questions, and we’re here with clear answers.

When Can You Have an Early Pregnancy Scan?
We offer early scans from 6 weeks onwards, calculated from the first day of your last period. At this point, it’s usually possible to detect a gestational sac and yolk sac, and by 6+ weeks, we often see a fetal heartbeat.
If you're unsure of your dates, have had previous complications, or just want peace of mind, early scanning can help.
What Happens During an Early Fetal Scan?
At your scan, we’ll guide you through each step. First, we ask a few questions about your cycle and any symptoms. Then we begin the scan.
Transvaginal scans are often clearer at this stage and are done with care and consent. If visibility is good, we may use a transabdominal scan instead.
You’ll be able to see the screen during the scan, and we’ll point out key details as we go—the heartbeat, the embryo, the yolk sac. You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s happening inside.

Early Scan vs. 12-Week Dating Scan
An early scan is for reassurance and early insight. It’s not a replacement for the standard 12-week scan, which includes detailed measurements and screening tests.
However, the early scan can ease worry, clarify dates, or flag potential issues early. For many, it offers relief in a time of uncertainty.
Who Can Benefit from an Early Scan?
You might want an early scan if:
-
You’ve experienced bleeding or pain
-
You’ve had previous miscarriages
-
You’re using IVF or fertility treatments
-
You’re feeling anxious or unsure
-
You’re eager to see early development
-
You want to confirm your dates
Early scans are safe and useful in these situations. We offer a safe space where questions are welcome and nothing is rushed.
