What Is a Fetal Wellbeing Scan?

A fetal wellbeing scan is a non-invasive ultrasound that checks the health, growth and position of your baby in the womb. It’s often used from 24 weeks onward, but we offer scans at multiple stages of pregnancy. The scan focuses on several key areas:

  • Baby’s heartbeat

  • Amniotic fluid levels

  • Placenta location and function

  • Growth measurements

  • Movement and position

These scans are not part of the HSE maternity service, which means you can book one without a GP referral.

When Should You Book a Fetal Wellbeing Scan in Roscommon?

We offer scans at various stages of pregnancy, but a fetal wellbeing scan is usually most useful between 24 and 36 weeks. You can book earlier or later depending on your needs or concerns.

Here’s what we typically check based on gestation:

  • Before 24 weeks – Early fetal growth, heartbeat, placenta position

  • 24–28 weeks – Movement, growth rate, fetal anatomy

  • 28–36 weeks – Baby’s position, fluid levels, estimated weight

  • After 36 weeks – Positioning for labour (head down or breech), placenta ageing

What the Scan Can Show

Our scans offer clear and accurate insights into your baby’s development:

  • Heartbeat: We check rhythm and rate

  • Placenta: Is it in a good position and functioning normally?

  • Amniotic fluid: Levels that are too high or low can indicate problems

  • Measurements: Head circumference, femur length, abdominal size

  • Weight estimate: Based on combined measurements

  • Movement: Helps us assess general wellbeing

  • Position: Whether baby is head down, breech or transverse

We explain each part clearly and never rush. You’ll get a full report to take home.

You can book online or by phone. We offer flexible appointment slots, including evenings and weekends, to fit around work and family life.
