4D Ultrasounds
At SureScan Studio in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, we offer professional 4D ultrasound scans in a calm, welcoming environment. Our studio is equipped with modern ultrasound technology, giving expectant parents a detailed look at their baby’s development. We take care to deliver accurate, safe, and high-quality images that families can treasure.

What Is a 4D Ultrasound?
A 4D ultrasound shows live, moving images of your baby in the womb. Unlike 2D scans that show flat, grey outlines, and 3D scans that give still, surface-level images, a 4D scan captures motion in real-time. You can see your baby smile, yawn, stretch, or suck their thumb as it happens.
4D scanning doesn’t replace medical scans, but it’s a unique way to connect with your baby before birth. Many families find it deeply reassuring to see such clear images and movements, especially in later stages of pregnancy.

When Is the Best Time for a 4D Scan?
We recommend booking your 4D scan between 24 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. This window gives you the best chance of clear images. After 32 weeks, your baby is larger and has less space to move, which can affect visibility.
If you’re unsure about the timing, get in touch with us before booking. We’ll guide you based on your due date and what you’d like to see during the scan.
What Happens During the Appointment?
Appointments usually last around 30 minutes. You'll lie comfortably while the sonographer applies a warm gel to your belly and begins scanning. You’ll watch your baby in real-time on a large screen.
We encourage you to bring a partner, friend, or family member. This is a moment worth sharing. Many parents are amazed by how clearly they can see facial features, little fingers and toes, and the baby’s movements.
After the scan, you’ll receive printed images and a digital copy of the session. You’ll have the option to purchase extra prints or framed keepsakes if you like.

Are 4D Scans Safe?
Yes, 4D scans use the same safe ultrasound technology as standard medical scans. We follow strict safety guidelines and do not use ultrasound for any purpose other than observation and bonding.
Ultrasound does not use radiation. It works by bouncing sound waves off your baby to create an image. Our sonographers are fully qualified and trained to use the equipment properly, and our studio is registered and insured.
How to Prepare for Your 4D Scan
Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment – this helps improve image quality. A full bladder isn’t necessary for this type of scan, but staying hydrated helps ensure clearer visuals.
You don’t need to bring anything specific. Just arrive on time, and try to relax. Most scans are straightforward, but sometimes babies are in a tricky position. If that happens, we may ask you to walk around or come back later. We’ll always do our best to get the best possible images.
